Buy Historical Weather Data: Formats, Pricing, and What to Check Before You Purchase

Buying weather data is one of those purchases where the wrong format costs more than the wrong price. A $150 file you can open today beats a cheaper API subscription that sits unused because nobody on the team has time to integrate it. Having sold weather data to analysts, universities, insurers, and Fortune 500 teams for years, here is the honest version of the buying decision, including the cases where you should not buy from us.

The three ways to get historical weather data

1. Weather APIs

Services like Visual Crossing and Meteomatics sell programmatic access: you send a location and date range, they return observations. This is the right choice when weather data feeds a live product, a dashboard that updates daily, a pricing engine, an app. The trade-offs are recurring cost, metered usage, and the need for someone who is comfortable writing and maintaining integration code. If you have engineers and an ongoing need, an API is genuinely the better tool.

2. Raw NOAA / NCEI records

The US government publishes the underlying station observations free. It is authoritative and it costs nothing, which makes it the right answer for funded research that requires citing primary sources, and for anyone with more time than budget. The cost is labor: station selection, download limits, quality flags, missing stretches, and the station-to-zip-code mapping problem we describe in our NOAA walkthrough. Budget days, not hours, for the first pass.

3. Flat files (what we sell)

A flat file is the processed result, every US zip code, cleaned and gap-filled, in one Excel or CSV download you buy once. It fits analysts doing a defined project: a weather-sensitivity study, a litigation exhibit, an insurance model backtest, a thesis. It does not fit a product that needs tomorrow’s data tomorrow; that is API territory.

What to check before you pay anyone

Ask for a sample file first, and actually open it. Confirm the geography (zip code? county? station?), the resolution (daily, monthly, averages), the time span, and the units. Ask how missing observations are handled, silently dropped rows corrupt joins. Check the license covers your use, commercial redistribution is where most free sources get restrictive. And check the total cost honestly: a subscription you keep for a year often exceeds a one-time file by multiples.

Most buyers land between $399 and $999 depending on resolution. Every dataset is listed with its scope on the pricing page, and the variable-specific guides (temperature, precipitation, snowfall) explain which file answers which question.
